case #6: real estate

ROB RUN land and settlements: how to buy a plot

Short answer: land is bought with a document. Unlock and buy the plot document at the Black Market, travel to a district of the right tier on the global map, drive to a free plot and use its red flag. You can only rent a plot in a settlement that a player owns. Since 4 November, Tier 1 land costs documents instead of cash.

How does land work in ROB RUN?

The global map is split into districts, and each district is made of settlements. Kefir's rules:

The global map: a desert divided into hexagon settlements grouped into named districts
Districts of hex settlements; Looty Bay sits on the coast to the east. Official screenshot, Kefir (Steam store).

How do you buy a plot?

  1. Unlock the plot document for your tier at the Black Market, then buy it. It goes into your inventory. (One launch-week video shows 25,000 to unlock and 75,000 to buy the Tier 1 document; the 4 November patch then switched Tier 1 to documents instead of cash, so check the current price in game.)
  2. Open the global map and pick a district of that tier.
  3. Drive to an empty plot in an owned settlement and walk up to the red flag.
  4. Buy it. The document is used up and the plot is yours.

Bought a document and cannot use it? Make sure the district's tier matches the document and the settlement has an owner.

Kefir promised on 1 November that buying and renting land "will be easier to understand", and the launch patch made the Tier 1 change. Housing areas are PvP zones: if you die there carrying a document, it can be looted.

Rent a plot or buy a whole settlement?

OptionWhat you get
Rent a plotYour own base, businesses, new Shipments, selling at the Sales Center and cheaper contraband. You pay the owner's taxes.
Buy a settlementRent plots out to other players and tax their laundered money and Black Market purchases. Your own base placement is free, and nobody can take the settlement from you before the wipe.

Where this sits in the bigger picture is on the power pyramid page.

What if every settlement is already taken?

Then you rent a plot (one player calls it buying a house on a lot) inside a settlement someone else owns. One player says the upgrades match those of an owner, at a much lower price than a whole settlement. Several players complain that on launch-week servers the Level 2 and 3 settlements went within hours, leaving latecomers on Level 1. A fresh server is the other way in: new ones open every day (schedule).

Why move up to a higher tier?

Kefir: the criminal contacts you can use, and so the goods you can buy, depend on the level of your home territory. Players aim for Level 3 because it unlocks every upgrade. Moving costs nothing in buildings: Kefir says you can move your entire base and everything in it at any time, and one launch-week guide shows the house, garage, fence and workbenches arrive intact on the new plot.

Can you sell a settlement or let friends move in?

Not documented yet. One player hit a limit of five settlements and found no way to free a slot; another was told friends need a pass to settle on their land. Neither has an official answer, and we will add one when Kefir posts it.
